GREAT SEASON FOR SIMSMORE JUNIORS!!!!

By Claudia Berns, March 30, 2010 12:28 pm

For the third year in a row Simsmore juniors have qualified for the State Championship!!!

The 18and 14 teams had a fantastic year! Congratulations to all players that participated! A big thank you to the parents for getting the players to all of the matches!

Our approach for the state tournament was to give as many players as possible the opportunity to experience the tournament.

The 14s played on Saturday March 21. They were the number 1 seed thanks to their undefeated season! Unfortunately we had to default a line because only two girls were available to play. The rules for the state stated that each team had to have a minumum of three boys and three girls.

Simsmore Juniors do it again!!!

By Claudia Berns, March 8, 2010 11:15 am

Our 14 and under Juniors continued their winning ways with a 72-13 win against Enfield. Competing for Simsmore was Alex Brunstad, Ashton Kille, Andrew Bell, Cole Miranda, Brady Cowling, Pam Fetzer, Ellen McNeill and Daniel Mittelman. Particularly noteworthy is the on court conduct of our juniors when they are clearly the superior players. Not a trace of arrogance was to be found, but a level of sportsmanship that all of us at the club can be most proud of. Learning to win graciously is every bit as important as learning to lose graciously. I am most impressed with our 14 and under team.

Simsmore Juniors edge Farmington Valley

By Claudia Berns, March 2, 2010 8:27 am

This weekend there was an eight court brawl between ST and FV!
It was great to have 32 kids playing non-stop tennis for two hours! The amount of fun and chatter by those not playing could have broken the concentration of the players… but not even close! It is great to see players competing with no excuses!
When the smoke cleared, Simsmore Tennis was the last club standing in both the 14′s and 18′s. Both matches were decided by 4 games!
Games balls were given to Nick Berns and Lauren Neureither of the 18′s team and Ashton Kille and Alex Brunstad of the 14′s team for being the only players to have wins in both singles and doubles!
The 18 team is done for the season and the 14′s have two matches left!
Thanks to the players, parents and coaches for a successful season!
Good luck to everyone going out for their high school teams! We are very proud of you!

18U JRS vs. Bloomfield

By Claudia Berns, February 22, 2010 3:29 pm

This match was not won on the courts today for Simsmore. The Bloomfield team was talented and played well. All completed matches were won by the Bloomfield Bobcats.
The match itself was won by Simsmore. 49-36.

The game balls for today’s match does not go to any individual player(s).

One goes to all the players that were present today. Who practiced against each other and spent their time playing. Some on a surface they had never seen.

One goes to the parents that got their juniors to the match, stayed, watched and cheered.

The last one goes to Claudia for being the most organized coach in the league. All you have to do is go to a match to see the outcome of her hard work and commitment to making Simsmore Tennis the best program it can be!

18U Juniors Edge Pinewoods!

By Claudia Berns, February 17, 2010 9:17 am

It was a great match.

The Simsmore Jr. USTA 18U match this Saturday against Pinewoods was one of the most competitive and fun to watch matches that I have ever seen as a coach. The match started out with some intense singles play on all courts. After the singles matches were completed Pinewoods was winning the match, despite being down a player and thus having to default both a singles and a doubles match.

The team knew that the overall match would be won or lost depending on their doubles matches, and they rose to the challenge. Colin Kirkland and Jordan Whalen dominated their opponents at the #1 Doubles spot with a 6-0 win. Both Mixed and #2 Doubles went to tiebreakers. Mary Pearce and Rob Brunstad took their game up to another level and won their tiebreaker 5-2. Our #2 Doubles team of Morgan Kille and Meghan Rosenberger both played very well in their tiebreaker, but lost 3-5 while both teams and everyone in the club’s lobby watched on with great anticipation.
In the end, Simsmore was victorious winning the match with an overall score of 53 to 47 games!!

JR 14U Team Victorious!!!

By Claudia Berns, February 15, 2010 8:58 am

Our 14 and under USTA Jr. team overcame a 12 game deficit at the outset (due to a last minute illness) to defeat Farmington Farms 60-44 on Sunday afternoon Feb. 12th, winning all the doubles matches and all but one singles match. Competing for Simsmore was Paul Greshin, Alex Brunstad, Cole Miranda, Ashton Kille, Brady Cowling, Jamie McNeill and Nicholas Hayes. Our players continue to demonstrate a good grasp of what to do and where to be in both singles and doubles, and the match results are bearing that out. While all the aforementioned players played well and represented Simsmore w/ exemplary behavior both on and off the courts, special recognition goes to Paul Greshin for his outstanding net play in both singles and doubles. Add to that excellent sportsmanship, and Paul is our MVP for todays team effort. Congratulations to Simsmore’s 14 and under team!
