4.0 Men – Victory at Middlebury

By Claudia Berns, February 22, 2010 3:31 pm

Everybody has to lose sometime… it’s just not our time yet. We posted a 4-1 victory at Middlebury today. Aram won 6-3, 6-2 at S1. Chaz also won, but I didn’t catch the scores. Although singles and doubles played at the same time, it’s great to be up 2-0 as we engage in doubles. Jeff and Tim won at D1, 6-2 and 6-3. And I know Lowell and Jason won in straight sets at D3. JonC and MikeO played the toughest opponent at D2, and came up a little short.

That puts our team record at 5-0. Everyone else has at least 2 losses, and most have 3. So, we’re doing really well, with only three matches to go. We don’t play next weekend, but we may play the weekend after, so as soon as we have a date and time, I will solicit feedback on availability. Keep up the great work guys!

18U JRS vs. Bloomfield

By Claudia Berns, February 22, 2010 3:29 pm

This match was not won on the courts today for Simsmore. The Bloomfield team was talented and played well. All completed matches were won by the Bloomfield Bobcats.
The match itself was won by Simsmore. 49-36.

The game balls for today’s match does not go to any individual player(s).

One goes to all the players that were present today. Who practiced against each other and spent their time playing. Some on a surface they had never seen.

One goes to the parents that got their juniors to the match, stayed, watched and cheered.

The last one goes to Claudia for being the most organized coach in the league. All you have to do is go to a match to see the outcome of her hard work and commitment to making Simsmore Tennis the best program it can be!

4.0 Women Match Results

By Claudia Berns, February 22, 2010 3:24 pm

Well, today’s matches were all two sets. We lost 2:3 in the end but it was another close one. Linda and Danna faced Death By Lobbing from Emily and Gail and ended up being ground down by them. I was next to them and it was painful to watch/hear never mind painful to play in it!! D2 (Heidi and I) and D3 (Denise and Michele) won in straight sets.

S1, Liz, gave a valiant performance but lost 4-6 5-7 against Yen and Sharon lost to Mary Byrne in another extremely close match 5-7 6-7. This was a great first match for the team, Sharon, you should be proud of yourself!

New Approach to Season Time

By Tim Ruark, February 19, 2010 5:51 pm

Starting with the 2010/11 indoor season, players wishing to reserve courts for the entire season will be required to pay in full in September. This is a change from current practice, but it is a necessary one, as we want our staff focusing on greeting customers warmly and talking tennis, and not on collections. Without this change, we would continue to face frequent criticism of our accounting system, primarily because we set up a receivable for the full year court cost, and this receivable confuses many of our players when they review their bill.

We think our players would be foolish to leave Simsmore Tennis on the eve of our expansion project, but we feel just as strongly that we should disclose any change in our practices prior to summer, so players that dislike the change have ample opportunity to research alternatives.

18U Juniors Edge Pinewoods!

By Claudia Berns, February 17, 2010 9:17 am

It was a great match.

The Simsmore Jr. USTA 18U match this Saturday against Pinewoods was one of the most competitive and fun to watch matches that I have ever seen as a coach. The match started out with some intense singles play on all courts. After the singles matches were completed Pinewoods was winning the match, despite being down a player and thus having to default both a singles and a doubles match.

The team knew that the overall match would be won or lost depending on their doubles matches, and they rose to the challenge. Colin Kirkland and Jordan Whalen dominated their opponents at the #1 Doubles spot with a 6-0 win. Both Mixed and #2 Doubles went to tiebreakers. Mary Pearce and Rob Brunstad took their game up to another level and won their tiebreaker 5-2. Our #2 Doubles team of Morgan Kille and Meghan Rosenberger both played very well in their tiebreaker, but lost 3-5 while both teams and everyone in the club’s lobby watched on with great anticipation.
In the end, Simsmore was victorious winning the match with an overall score of 53 to 47 games!!

JR 14U Team Victorious!!!

By Claudia Berns, February 15, 2010 8:58 am

Our 14 and under USTA Jr. team overcame a 12 game deficit at the outset (due to a last minute illness) to defeat Farmington Farms 60-44 on Sunday afternoon Feb. 12th, winning all the doubles matches and all but one singles match. Competing for Simsmore was Paul Greshin, Alex Brunstad, Cole Miranda, Ashton Kille, Brady Cowling, Jamie McNeill and Nicholas Hayes. Our players continue to demonstrate a good grasp of what to do and where to be in both singles and doubles, and the match results are bearing that out. While all the aforementioned players played well and represented Simsmore w/ exemplary behavior both on and off the courts, special recognition goes to Paul Greshin for his outstanding net play in both singles and doubles. Add to that excellent sportsmanship, and Paul is our MVP for todays team effort. Congratulations to Simsmore’s 14 and under team!
